The footing programme also incorporated step-downs — changes in footing elevation that follow the site's natural gradient and the structural engineer's founding depth requirements. Step-downs add a layer of complexity to both the excavation and the formwork: each step-down transition must be correctly formed, the concrete must pour continuously across the transition without cold joints, and the finished footing profile must match the drawings exactly so the structure above can be set out accurately from it.

Excavation for the footings was carried out with an excavator, working to the depths and profiles specified by the engineer for each footing zone. Colacrete managed the concrete placement — the steel reinforcement was fixed by others as part of the broader project delivery structure, and Colacrete's scope was the concrete to the formed and reinforced footings.

Retaining wall footings

The retaining wall footings form the structural base of the retaining walls that hold back the excavated earth on the site perimeter — an essential structural element on a multi-storey project where the lowest level sits below the surrounding ground level.

The undercroft slab

The undercroft slab forms the structural floor of the building's lowest level — the partially or fully below-ground zone that typically houses parking, storage or building services on a multi-storey development. An undercroft slab sits at the intersection of the structural footing programme and the above-ground building frame: it must be accurately levelled, correctly reinforced to the engineer's specification and poured to the tolerances that the frame erection above requires. The concrete pump allowed the undercroft concrete to be placed efficiently across the slab area from a single pump position, maintaining consistent placement speed and minimising the risk of cold joints in the slab.

The lift shaft

The lift shaft was formed and poured as part of the stage one scope — the structural concrete core that will house the lift mechanism throughout the life of the building. Lift shafts require precise set-out in both plan and level: the shaft walls must be vertical, plumb and to the correct internal dimensions for the lift equipment that will be installed. The concrete placement must be managed carefully to avoid displacing the formwork under the pressure of the wet concrete.

The overall stage one scope demanded sustained precision across every element — from the set-out of complex, varying-width footings through to the lift shaft. Stage one of the project covered the structural foundation work: retaining wall footings, strip footings across the full footprint, an undercroft slab and the lift shaft — all poured at 25MPa using a concrete pump.

The footing programme

The footings on this project were among the most technically demanding set-out and pour scopes Colacrete has executed. The structural engineer's drawings specified strip footings of varying widths across different zones of the site — not a single consistent footing dimension running from end to end, but a programme of footings whose width changes to reflect the loads imposed by the structure above at each point. Reading and executing varying-width footing drawings requires careful interpretation of the engineering documentation and precise set-out on site before a single metre of excavation begins.
