YOUR LOCAL CONCRETING PARTNERStandard Grey Concrete Perth
Standard grey concrete is by far our most popular selection amongst our clients among Perth. It underpins more of the City’s homes, driveways, floor slabs and suspended slabs, footpaths and commercial properties than any other finish, and for good reason. Poured correctly, standard grey concrete is strong, long-lasting, and one of the most cost-effective building materials available. At Colacrete, we pour standard grey concrete every week, for homeowners, builders and developers for residential projects and commercial properties.
What is standard grey concrete? Standard grey concrete is a mix of Portland cement, sand, aggregate and water, mixed and batched by our suppliers to a structural specification and poured to form a solid and load-bearing surface. Its grey colour comes from Portland cement. Unlike coloured concrete, grey concrete has no oxide pigment added, no decorative aggregate and no surface treatment that you commonly see for a decorative finish. The result is a clean finish aimed for structural performance rather than aesthetics. It is used for ground slabs and suspended slabs, where the grey concrete is not the finished surface.
A broom or trowelled finish is typically applied to the surface. A broom (brushed) finish gives a slightly textured, slip-resistant surface and is common among driveways, pathways and outdoor areas. On the other hand, a trowel finish gives a smooth, flat surface, suitable for slabs that will have a covering layer on top, such as tiles, vinyl and carpet, and suitable for garage and workshop slabs.
When people talk about upgrading to exposed aggregate or honed concrete, standard grey is the baseline they are departing from.
Why choose standard grey concrete in Perth?
Standard grey concrete is really your go-to for concrete slabs.
AFFORDABLE: Standard grey concrete is the most cost-effective option for concreting. Without oxidising colour, decorative aggregate, or post pour grinding and sealing, standard grey concrete is more cost effective and affordable than other decorative finishes. For applications where function is prioritised, such as structural slabs such as house slabs and suspended slabs, grey concrete delivers the structural outcome at the best price point.
STRUCTURAL PERFORMANCE: Grey concrete poured to the right mix design, thickness and specification such as reinforcement, matches the structural performance of any decorative concrete. House slabs, footings, garage pads and retaining wall bases all use standard grey concrete for a reason.
VERSATILITY: Grey concrete doesn’t limit you to one application. It works for house slabs, driveways, crossovers, shed pads, footpaths, retaining wall footings, and others. The same mix, batched to spec, poured across different projects.
FAST TURNAROUND: Without the extra steps such as exposing and sealing that you see with exposed aggregate, standard grey concrete jobs generally have a shorter active work period. The concrete is poured, finished, and ready for use on the same schedule, without the additional day or two of grinding and sealing that decorative concrete requires.
PRACTICAL CHOICE: When a surface will be covered, by tiles, vinyl or carpet, or a decorative overlay, the underlying slab needs to be structurally sound and level. Standard grey is the specification for this application.
STRAIGHTFORWARD MAINTENANCE: An unsealed grey concrete driveway or path requires nothing beyond periodic cleaning. If you choose to seal it, resealing every few years is sufficient. There’s no decorative aggregate to protect and no polished surface to maintain.
Where standard grey concrete is most often used in Perth
Standard grey concrete is by far our most popular selection, given the vast range of application types. We see the application to areas in Perth including:
Driveways and crossovers: Particularly for new builds, investment properties, and homeowners who prioritise function and price over decorative finish.
House slabs: The structural slab underpinning the structure, for homes, commercial and investment properties.
Garage and shed pads: Level, reinforced pads that handle vehicle loads and machinery.
Footpaths and pathways: Garden paths, side passages, verge crossings and council-compliant public footpaths.
Footings and pads: Strip footings, pad footings, retaining wall foundations.
Under slab areas: For areas where structural performance matters most.
Investment properties: Where the priority is durability and low maintenance costs
Considering a decorative finish? If you are unsure whether standard grey concrete or a decorative finish, such as exposed aggregate, honed, polished, liquid limestone, is the right choice for your project, we are happy to talk through the options with you. Sometimes a partial solution works well too. For example, a grey slab at the rear, with a decorative finish in the front section that catches the eye from the street.
FAQ
-
A broom (brushed) finish is produced by dragging a stiff brush across the concrete surface while it's still workable, leaving a textured, slightly rough surface. It provides grip and is the standard for driveways, pathways, and any outdoor surface where slip resistance matters. A steel trowel finish is worked smooth (flat and hard) and is common for internal slabs that will have a floor covering, garage and workshop floors, and anywhere you want a clean surface without texture.

Standard grey concrete is the most affordable concreting option. As a guideline, it typically ranges from $85/m2 to $170/m2. We price based on a project-by-project basis, and is subject to site access, site preparation requirements, the size of the area, the reinforcement requirements, material selection etc. Smaller jobs are often on the higher end of the sqm rate. For a precise quote, get in touch with us. We usually provide our prices within 24 to 48 hours, and can quote based on drawings and specs, or can come out to site and do a free measure and quote.

Generally, initial set happens within hours of the pour, no foot traffic for 24 to 48 hours, no vehicle traffic for 7 days and full structural strength at 28 days. In Perth's summer heat, curing is particularly important, concrete can dry too fast and surface crack if not properly cured.
-
All concrete moves slightly as it expands and contracts with temperature. We cannot guarantee against cracking. Hairline cracking is normal and not structural. We do our best to control cracking through proper slab depth, appropriate reinforcement for the load, and saw-cut control joints placed at correct intervals. Major structural cracking is rare with a properly designed and installed slab.
-
No, standard grey concrete does not require sealing to perform its structural function. Sealing is usually to preserve and maintain the appearance of decorative finishes. For standard grey concrete, sealing improves stain resistance (oil, grease, tyre marks on driveways), and reduces surface dusting. For driveways and high-use areas, we generally recommend a penetrating sealer as a worthwhile add-on. For structural slabs that will be covered, sealing is unnecessary.
-
For standard grey driveways and footpaths, the concrete is typically 100mm with mesh reinforcement. For garage slabs, the concrete is also 100mm, with additional reinforcement where heavy vehicles will be parked. For house slabs and structural footings, the thickness and reinforcement requirements are dictated and specified by an engineer. For slabs, we commonly see the thickness between 100 to 150mm, and it usually depends on factors such as soil conditions.
-
Viewed over a 20 year period, concrete driveways and paths typically out perform pavers. With concrete, there is no need for weed removal, no joint maintenance like with pavers, and no need for individual paver replacement. There is also fewer trip hazards (no uneven edges from settling like with pavers) and concrete has a more contemporary look and feel. On the other hand, pavers offer easier individual repair (although the availability of the paver may prove difficult if the replacement is years after the initial lay, and pavers also offer more design flexibility.

Let us know as soon as possible when your job is ready so that we can secure your booking in. We generally require between one to three weeks notice for smaller jobs, and about a month for larger jobs to secure a spot and make sure our concrete suppliers have availability.
