Honed & polished concrete
Honed and polished concrete are architectural finishes from the same premium supply chain as exposed aggregate. The difference is in how the surface is processed: honed concrete is mechanically ground to a refined matte finish and sealed. Both finishes start with the same architectural mix design. Polished concrete takes the mechanical grinding process to a high-gloss finish, typically used for interior ground slabs, garages and undercover alfrescos. Decorative ground slabs are poured at 32MPa to accommodate the polishing process.

Cavity fill and suspended slab for a commercial office extension — structural concrete to engineering specification
In Maddington, Colacrete completed the structural concrete scope for a commercial office extension for a builder client: cavity fill to the concrete masonry block walls and a suspended slab at over 200mm thickness. The ground floor slab is a subsequent stage of this project, to be completed as the build progresses.
Cavity fill
The cavity fill scope involved pumping concrete into the hollow cores of the concrete masonry block walls across the relevant area of the extension. Filling the cavities of block walls with concrete increases the compressive strength and lateral stability of the wall system — converting what would otherwise be hollow-core block construction into a solid, mass-concrete wall capable of carrying greater loads and providing better structural performance. The cavity fill was treated as a separate operation to the suspended slab, completed in its own stage.
Suspended slab — 200mm
The suspended slab was poured at over 200mm thickness — a substantially heavier specification than a standard residential suspended slab, reflecting the commercial loading requirements of the office extension. A 200mm suspended slab carries greater imposed floor loads than a residential floor and requires a correspondingly robust structural specification. Colacrete poured the concrete to the engineer's specified mix and thickness. Back propping beneath the slab — the temporary propping system that supports the slab from below during and after the pour while the concrete gains strength — was managed by others on this project; Colacrete's scope was the concrete placement and finish.

Back propping is the temporary propping system installed beneath a suspended slab during and after the pour to prevent the slab from deflecting under its own wet weight before the concrete achieves sufficient strength. On the Maddington office extension, back propping was managed by others on the project — Colacrete's scope was the concrete placement and finish to the engineer's specification. On projects where back propping is within Colacrete's scope, we manage it as part of the structural concrete package.
