Exposed aggregate

Honed & polished concrete
Honed and polished concrete are architectural finishes from the same premium supply chain as exposed aggregate. The difference is in how the surface is processed: honed concrete is mechanically ground to a refined matte finish and sealed. Both finishes start with the same architectural mix design. Polished concrete takes the mechanical grinding process to a high-gloss finish, typically used for interior ground slabs, garages and undercover alfrescos. Decorative ground slabs are poured at 32MPa to accommodate the polishing process.
Our work in North Perth
Boral Atlantis Beach exposed aggregate driveway, step and porch — a complete entry scope for a character home
In North Perth, Colacrete completed a full entry concrete package for a residential client: an exposed aggregate driveway, a step and a porch, all finished in Boral's Atlantis Beach exposed aggregate mix.
Atlantis Beach is an architectural exposed aggregate product from Boral's premium supply range — a carefully composed blend that delivers a refined, natural tone well suited to North Perth's character home streetscapes. The selection of a specific architectural mix reflects the level of design consideration that goes into North Perth renovations, where the external finish of a property is visible from the street and contributes meaningfully to both the home's appeal and the quality of the wider streetscape.
The scope extended beyond the flat driveway surface to include a step and porch in the same Atlantis Beach finish. This is where the technical demands of exposed aggregate work increase: the step nosing, the porch surface and the driveway all need to be poured, exposed and finished to a consistent depth and texture so the aggregate reads uniformly across every surface. The transitions between the flat driveway, the step riser and the porch level need to be planned in the formwork stage — the finished result is only as clean as the planning that precedes the pour. Getting the exposure timing right across multiple surface orientations in a single scope requires experience and care.
The driveway, step and porch were sealed on completion to protect the Atlantis Beach finish and ensure it holds its appearance over time.

Why North Perth homeowners and builders choose Colacrete
North Perth sits within the City of Vincent — one of Perth's most sought-after inner suburbs, characterised by Federation and Interwar character homes, leafy streets and a strong sense of established identity. The suburb's location between the CBD and the northern beaches corridor makes it consistently popular with renovators and owner-occupiers who invest in properties for the long term and expect the quality of external finishes to match the quality of the home behind them.
Sandy soils with limestone substrate are typical of North Perth's inner-Perth position — generally reliable subgrade conditions, though older lots with mature street trees, historic fill and the constrained frontages common on character home blocks can introduce access and subgrade challenges not present on newer outer-suburb sites. Narrow side access, established gardens and period fences are standard features of North Perth renovation jobs, and Colacrete plans around them on the site visit.
The most common concrete scope in North Perth reflects the suburb's renovation culture: exposed aggregate and honed driveways replacing ageing plain concrete, entry features including steps and porches that tie the driveway into the home's facade, pool surround upgrades on established backyards, and alfresco and outdoor living areas on homes being opened up to the rear garden. Finish quality matters here — North Perth homeowners are not looking for the cheapest concreter, they are looking for the right one.

"... just had eddie from Colacrete do my exposed aggregate driveway, footpath and honed backyard/ pool surround with singleton mix from boral. I can not express how unbelievable he was! Ive come from a customer service background and he is truly an amazing professional at what he does. From with keeping his word, organisation, quotes on time, checking to see if i was happy pre-pour and post pour, so thoroughly with his planning and prep and the small unexpected thing we face which was a builder issue he gave me great advice and expertise on fixing it. If i could give 10 stars i would! After months of dealing with other concrete companies and seeing how unprofessional some were with getting ridiculous prices, constantly chasing up quotes when they said they'll send to me, getting companies that just never got in contact when they said they would. Eddie from the very beginning exceeded all expectations and from his engineering background had the attention to detail and ideas no one else suggested! Ive had 3 neighbours in Henley brook ask who did my concrete, so If you're thinking of getting concrete, ask for eddy and you wont be disappointed!"

Yes — crossovers in North Perth fall under City of Vincent requirements. Approval is required before construction, covering materials, width, gradient and proximity to street infrastructure including the protected street trees that line many North Perth streets. The City of Vincent has specific guidelines around crossover width and materials in character home areas. Colacrete is familiar with City of Vincent crossover specifications and advises on requirements during the site visit and quoting process.

Atlantis Beach is an architectural exposed aggregate product from Boral's premium concrete supply range — one of Perth's leading concrete product suppliers. It is a carefully composed aggregate blend that produces a refined, natural finish well suited to the coastal and character aesthetic of suburbs like North Perth. Choosing a specific named architectural product rather than a standard aggregate blend gives the homeowner confidence in the consistency and quality of the finish. Boral's architectural range is available through our supplier partners — we encourage clients to view physical samples in person before committing to a mix.

Yes — steps and porch areas in the same aggregate finish as the driveway are a natural extension of the scope and something Colacrete does regularly. The technical consideration is consistency: the step nosing, porch surface and driveway slab all need to be exposed at the same depth and texture so the aggregate reads uniformly across every surface. Managing the exposure timing across multiple surface orientations in a single job requires planning and coordinated labour. The result — a driveway, step and porch in one continuous, matching finish — is significantly more cohesive than a driveway with separately finished entry elements.

North Perth's Federation, Interwar and post-war character homes suit finishes that complement rather than clash with established architectural details. Exposed aggregate in natural, neutral tones is the most popular driveway choice in North Perth — lighter blends from Boral's architectural range, including Atlantis Beach, suit the suburb's brick and render character well. Honed concrete is popular for alfresco areas and pool surrounds on renovated properties where a refined contemporary finish is part of the brief. Liquid limestone works well for pool surrounds. Grey concrete is the practical choice for garage pads and functional rear areas where the finish is not on display from the street.
