Exposed aggregate

Available mixes include Coral White, Eucalyptus White and Kaajani Grey among many others — see samples in person at our supplier partners in East Perth, Bibra Lake and Osborne Park before committing.

Honed & polished concrete
Honed and polished concrete are architectural finishes from the same premium supply chain as exposed aggregate. The difference is in how the surface is processed: honed concrete is mechanically ground to a refined matte finish and sealed. Both finishes start with the same architectural mix design. Polished concrete takes the mechanical grinding process to a high-gloss finish, typically used for interior ground slabs, garages and undercover alfrescos. Decorative ground slabs are poured at 32MPa to accommodate the polishing process.
Our work in St James
Ground floor footings and slab — structural concrete for a builder client
In St James, Colacrete completed the structural concrete package for a residential project for a builder client: concrete footings and a 100mm ground floor slab, with a planned control joint incorporated into the slab design.
The builder client was referred to Colacrete by an recurring client, and required a concreter urgently to meet the builder’s construction programme.
The footing programme was completed first, establishing the structural foundation for the ground floor slab above. The ground floor slab was poured to the specified 20MPA at 100mm thickness on top of reinforcement and waterproofing membrane.
The scope was delivered to the builder client's programme requirements — footings and slab completed in sequence, ready for the build to progress above.

Why St James homeowners and builders choose Colacrete
St James sits within the City of Victoria Park — an established inner suburb on the south-eastern edge of the Perth CBD corridor, adjacent to the Causeway and close to the Swan River. Its inner-city location and established character have made it an active market for renovation, extension and infill development as owners invest in properties with strong locational fundamentals. Soils in St James are predominantly sandy, consistent with the Swan River corridor and the broader City of Victoria Park area — generally reliable subgrade conditions for slab work. Access on established St James lots is typically constrained by existing structures and landscaping, which Colacrete accounts for in site planning. The most common concrete scope in St James reflects the suburb's renovation activity: structural slabs and footings for extensions, driveway replacements and upgrades, and outdoor living improvements on established rear yards.
Colacrete is a member of the Housing Industry Australia (HIA), Master Builders Association (MBA) and Concrete Institute of Australia (CIA). Eddie brings an engineering background in civil and construction management alongside long-standing experience across concreting and general construction projects spanning a wide variety of disciplines, scales and scopes.

Yes — a residential extension in St James requires a building permit from the City of Victoria Park before any structural concrete is poured. All structural concrete including footings and ground floor slabs must be executed to the licensed structural engineer's approved drawings. Colacrete works precisely to those drawings on every structural scope. Your builder manages the permit process — our role begins once the drawings and approvals are in hand.

A control joint is a planned joint — either saw-cut into the slab shortly after the pour or formed before it — that gives concrete a designated location to move as it shrinks slightly during curing and over time with temperature changes. Without planned control joints, shrinkage movement produces random cracks across the slab surface. With correctly placed control joints, the movement is confined to the joint locations where it is expected and acceptable. Joint placement is calculated relative to slab dimensions and thickness before the pour — not added as an afterthought.

St James's established character homes and newer renovation projects suit a range of finishes. For driveways, exposed aggregate in warm neutral tones from Boral and Limecrete makes a meaningful improvement to street presence on the suburb's brick and render homes. Grey concrete remains the practical choice for structural slabs, garage pads and functional areas. Honed and polished concrete are increasingly popular for indoor living areas and alfresco surfaces on renovation projects in the City of Victoria Park area.
