The finish was liquid limestone in a mildly textured surface that provides slip resistance while maintaining the clean, light aesthetic liquid limestone is valued for. A 150mm raised edge was constructed above the existing limestone retaining wall, tying the pool surround neatly into the boundary detail.
Aged pools from this era often come with complications: irregular bond beam profiles, non-standard waterline heights and pool edges that are not perfectly level over their full perimeter. Achieving a flush, consistent liquid limestone surround across these conditions requires patience in the formwork and precision in the pour. Subgrade preparation was completed across the full surround footprint prior to pouring.
Our work in Bicton
Liquid limestone pool surround on a curved 1970s pool — precision edging on a heritage-era design
In Bicton, Colacrete completed a liquid limestone pool surround on a property featuring a curved, irregular-shaped pool typical of the 1970s residential era. The organic pool shape — common in Perth's established riverside suburbs from that period — presented specific technical challenges that rectangular modern pools simply don't: every run of edging had to transition smoothly through the curve, and the formwork required considerably more care than a straight-sided pool allows.

Why Bicton homeowners and builders choose Colacrete
Bicton is a City of Melville suburb with strong riverside character — established trees, quality homes from multiple eras and a demographic that invests in considered property improvement. It sits between Attadale and East Fremantle on the Swan River's southern bank, sharing their riverside microclimate and their history of older pool installations from the 1960s and 1970s. Soils are sandy with limestone influence, typical of the western coastal strip — subgrade is generally stable but surface drainage design remains important. The most common concrete scope in Bicton reflects the suburb's vintage housing stock: pool surround upgrades on older pools of organic shape, liquid limestone applications on established properties, and driveway replacements or upgrades as owners invest in street presence before or after renovation.
Colacrete is a member of the Housing Industry Australia (HIA), Master Builders Association (MBA) and Concrete Institute of Australia (CIA). Eddie brings an engineering background in civil and construction management alongside long-standing experience across concreting and general construction projects spanning a wide variety of disciplines, scales and scopes.

Crossovers in Bicton require City of Melville approval before construction. Pool surrounds and outdoor concrete areas are generally considered part of the building envelope — a building permit may be required depending on scope, particularly where raised edges, retaining walls or structural elements are involved. We advise on permit requirements during the quoting process.

Liquid limestone is available in a range of colours and textures. The sponge or fishtail pattern is the most popular for pool surrounds in Bicton's established homes — it provides mild texture for slip resistance while keeping the clean, light look the finish is known for. Coloured options are available where the surround needs to complement existing wall tiles or landscaping. We can provide colour options during the site visit.

Yes — older pools with organic curved shapes are something we work with regularly in suburbs like Bicton. They require more precise formwork than a rectangular pool but the result is just as clean and consistent. The cantilevered pool edge system works on curved pools. We assess each pool individually on the site visit to understand the bond beam profile and any level variations across the perimeter.
